Clip: Edna Mode welcomes back Mr. Incredible

The best cartoons growing up were ones that were aimed at both kids and adults, like the Looney Tunes with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, or the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. The Incredibles manages this multi-layered presence with masterful ease at feature length.

The story is a fast-paced superhero tale, with a situation comedy twist: Two superheros are married to each other, and their children have superpowers, also. The tongue-in-cheek approach is nuanced with many knowing references and jokes, and the characterizations are clever. It is one of the best animated features ever made.

With Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter effectively playing the lead roles of Dad and Mom superhero, the best role is one played by the writer / director Brad Bird, who introduces the inspired and truly timeless Edna Mode, fashion designer and tailor to the superheroes, modeled on Edith Head, who informs us, in a Talullah Bankhead voice:

I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now.

This movie is one of the best animated features ever made.
